OBOS is the largest Nordic cooperative building association. OBOS has about 300.000 members, most of them in the Oslo-area. The companys objectives through all these years, have been to make housing available to members, and to manage housing cooperatives and condominium associations.

OBOS was founded on the principles that members should contribute through savings, housing should be offered to members at cost, down payments should be covered by contributions from each individual member; and that housing should be of ordinary, but good standard with modern fittings.

Lately a series of commercials featuring the Italian Stereotype of men has been released to promote that Flavio, Giovanni and Luca likes to live at Mamma’s place so they don’t need to be members of OBOS, because they have always comes first in Mammas house anyways, but if YOU don’t want to live at home forever – it is smart to be a member of OBOS so that you can get easy access to your own home.

Translation:
Some people prefer to live with Mamma.
If you would prefer your own place, OBOS gives you the right of first refusal to over 80 000 apartments over huge parts of the countries – as well as good conditions on loans, savings and insurrance. Not a member yet. Join at OBOS.no

Giovanni

Translation:
Italian mothers rage against Norwegian OBOS, who they think will steal their sons.
– Mamma?
– Giovanni, I’m coming
– I love living with my mom (mom Tickles) – Mamma *Giggles*
It can become dangerously easy for young men to leave their homes, opinionates Signora Cassini.
– My son is too important to make his own dinner.
Some people prefer to live with Mamma, but if you would prefer to live on your own, it may be convenient to be a member of OBOS and have the rights of first refusal to 80 000 homes and apartments.

Flavio

Luca

Translation:
– Mamma
– Come on up my boy
Rumors about Norwegian OBOS has created insecurity in Italy, where it is common that grown men lives at home with their moms.
It is feared that OBOS will make it too easy to move away from home.
– The most important thing is that we find you a good wife and until then you can live here with Mamma *kiss Goodnight*
– Hey, Hands over the duvet
Some people prefer to live with Mamma, but if you would prefer to live on your own, it may be convenient to be a member of OBOS and have the rights of first refusal to 80 000 homes and apartments.

Forza Famiglia

I have many Italian friends, and many of them does not live with their mothers, but have lived years and years on their own, but then I also do know some that does live with their mothers. However Italy is a place where even if you have a good job, it may not be very well paid (1000-1600 €) and the level of living cost in particularly Rome, is quite expensive (600-800 €) which makes it in some situations very difficult to move out from home despite wanting to.

But there are real men that actually prefer to live like this as well:
See this article on CBS News on an interview by Lesley Stahl interviewing 5 Italian Men, whom still live at home with their mothers, on 60 minutes.

And while these commercials might be “Spot On” according to some, others find them both racistic and discriminatory.
